Freshwater catfish (hito or pantat) of genus Clarias is an important food fish in Southeast Asia. It is cultured extensively in the Philippines due to its suitability to Philippine conditions, abundance of freshwater areas, locally developed technologies for production and the presence of a vibrant market. Among the three species Clarias macrocephalus (Native catfish), Clarias batrachus (Thailand catfish) and Clarias gariepinus (African catfish) found in the country, C. gariepinus is the most widely cultured.
Freshwater catfish has cylindrical body with slimy and scale less skin. They have eight barbells around their mouth that serves as tentacles. They have aborescent organs that enables them to tolerate low levels of oxygen and high turbid water conditions, thus they are considered hardy fishes. Read the rest of this entry »

Over the years, commercial production of mudcrab (Scyllaspp.) has been undertaken only in bamboo – or net-fenced brackish water ponds. Its feasibility was proven trough a series of verification trials conducted in commercial ponds by SEAFDEC/AQD researchers and is now practiced elsewhere in the country.
Of late, the introduction of using net enclosure to grow mudcrabs in mangroves or tidal zone offers a bright prospect in aquasilviculture. Using mangroves as a natural resource paves the way for creating livelihood among the fisherfolk in the coastal areas. While this method is not very popular in the Philippines, as it ha only recently been introduced, the same has been carried out for quite some time in Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and China successfully. Calamansi (citrus mitis blanco) is indigenous in the Philippines. It is also known as kalamondin, kalamunding, kalamansi, or lemonsito. The tree is small and densely branched that bears plentiful small green fruits. The fruits are available throughout the year and the peak season of the harvest is in mid-August through October.
The fruit us rich in vitamin C. The extracted juice is usually used for culinary purposes. Calamansi juice drink is also often prepared at home for its medicinal properties. Now, extracted juice can be processed and bottled commercially as ready-to-drink calamansi juice. The process of making ready-to-drink calamansi juice is very simple.
